Why does every data center need a lightning protection system?

1st May 2023: Axis India assists industrial clients in following the right and standard parameters in designing an earthing system while building a new data center.
Axis India is an ISO 9001:2015 certified electrical component manufacturing company offering the best-in-class earthing systems for data center functioning. It also explains the need for Earthing and Lightning Protection in Data Centers.

Why is there a need for a lightning protection system?

The need for reliable and secure data centers has never been more significant as the world becomes more reliant on technology. However, these critical facilities can only be vulnerable to a wide range of hazards with proper earthing and lightning protection. There is a concurrent steep growth of Data Centres around the world. These Data Centres have loads of servers and racks sensitive to heat and electrical fluctuations. That holds mission-critical information for thousands of businesses across the globe.

Hence, the Earthing, Lightning Protection System, Surge Protection, and Equipotential Bonding for data centers are crucial to ensure uninterrupted functioning.

Here is what the specialists recommend to weigh upon.

Using the concept of Lightning Protection Zones (LPZ) and International Standard References for Data Centre, we ensure high levels of speed, uptime and data handling capacity are intertwined at Data Centers through:

• Detailed Power Supply system with redundant generators to ensure that servers are always powered.
• AC and Cooling systems to keep the servers at the optimum temperature to avoid fires & faults.
• Earthing, Bonding & Surge Protection systems to ensure optimum uptime and no data loss. Even a tiny surge in an unprotected data center could cause critical services like Netflix (which runs on AWS) to become completely unavailable in a country.

Axis also helps assist in Testing the Earthing System of a Data Center. If you are building a new data centre, contact us to design an earthing system to ensure that your data center has the highest uptime and speed with zero data loss.

With over 29 years of experience, Axis India protects the electrical systems of residential and commercial infrastructure from power surges and lightning strikes. Its electrical component designs are tested and authorized by national and international regulatory management. Why should you use a Chemically Charged Pipe Electrode over other Electrodes?

Earthing or grounding is critical to electrical safety in any installation. A chemical earthing electrode prevents electrical hazards. This electrode is connected to the equipment or structure to be grounded, creating a safe and effective electrical grounding system. Chemical earthing electrodes are quickly becoming the preferred choice for electrical grounding systems compared to other types of electrodes.

Chemically Charged Pipe Electrodes create a low-impedance path to the ground for a safe and effective electrical grounding system. They are a reliable and efficient grounding solution thanks to their numerous benefits, superior conductivity, durability,
and ease of installation.

Here are the features and advantages of Chemically Charged Pipe Electrodes that gives these electrodes an edge over others:

• Have a low-resistance electrolyte, which ensures a stable and long-lasting grounding system.

• Have exceptional electrical conductivity, lower resistance and electrical impedance.

• Adept at resisting high fault currents without fusing or mechanical deterioration.

• They dissipate heavy fault currents and electrical surges efficiently, both in magnitude and duration, shielding equipment from damage and minimizing downtime.

Overall, using Chemically Charged Pipe Electrodes can help increase the efficiency and productivity of your industrial processes while reducing maintenance costs and downtime. The appropriate Standards for Chemically Charged Pipe Electrodes are IS 3043/1987 Earthing Practice Code, IEC 62561-7 Earthing improvement compound necessity, and IEEE-80- 2013 IEEE Guide for Safety in AC Sub Station Grounding

Axis India Explains How to Design an Efficient Earthing System with Its Electrical Components

28th February 2023: Axis India assists industrial clients in following the right and standard parameters and installing a professional earthing design for protecting electrical systems and valuable appliances.

Axis India is an ISO 9001:2015 certified electrical component manufacturing company offering the best-in-class grounding components for commercial and residential infrastructures. It also explains how a standard grounding design should be opted out based on specific requirements. Here is what the experts suggest to ponder upon.
Testing soil conditions: A site survey is conducted to understand the soil conditions, soil resistance, building information, etc.

Determination of earthing system requirements: The grounding system components are determined based on the survey conducted.

Grounding system design: A user-specific grounding system is designed following the IEC 62305 Part 3, BS 7430 and IS 3043.

System review: The design is then reviewed and refined in terms of operability, functionality, code of standards and cost.

The grounding system manufacturer then focuses on the standard layout designs and suggests the same. It focuses on the functionality of a layout design by considering the external factors not relevant to the electrical components used, such as the size and placement of the earth rods, building layout, soil conditions, etc. It helps to understand the specific elements to be procured and installed in a particular location on a premise.
Axis India also helps in assisting and explaining how to determine the pitfalls beforehand and avoid them during the designing and installation process. The common pitfalls are improper soil and location survey, wrong choice of grounding components following the NEC and IEC standards and improper maintenance practices.

With over 29 years of experience, Axis India safeguards the electrical systems of residential and commercial infrastructure from power surges and lightning strikes. Its electrical component designs are tested and certified by national and international regulatory authorities. A guide on using Insulation Piercing Connector

Insulation Piercing Connectors (IPCs) are electrical components used for accepting tap connections in aerial bundled (AB) or overhead cables. As the name suggests, this connector is used to tap on a main electric supply line to create a new connection for various purposes.

The design features of an Insulation Piercing Connector offer the following benefits.
1. Exceptional electrical connection with insulated overhead cables
2. Excellent mechanical properties to offer strength and durability
3. Top-quality material is chosen to impart protection from external or environmental factors.

From street lighting to domestic connections, an IPC establishes a T connection. Here is a list of application domains of IPCs.

• Tap off and multi-tap connections to households
• Street light connections
• Distribution box charging connections
• Jumper connections

IPCs are generally used to add benefits to the electrical system. The prime advantages are quick fastening to the main overhead cable and providing exceptional stability to the connections. Despite being exposed to weather conditions, an Insulation Piercing Connector will not cause any electrical fault or compromise its durability.

Another advantage of using IPCs is no need to strip off the insulation of the conducting cables. Simply installing an IPC will do the trick. There is no need to use post-installation tape after connecting with an overhead line. They get used for copper-to-aluminium, copper-to copper and aluminium-to-aluminium combinations.

Hence, choosing an IPC is decided on the industrial requirement and design specifications. It is ideal to seek certified and tested IPCs for better outcomes.

How is Structural Earthing different from conventional Earthing?

December 26, 2022: Understanding the difference between conventional and structural earthing is essential to make the right choice by orchestrating a connection between electrical and non-electrical equipment.

A particular metallic structure with a proper current-carrying capacity is more likely to be hit by lightning. In some cases, there is a risk from the fault current. A fault can cause in the equipment that is closely attached to the metallic structure. Hence, the design structure needs to be under protection. It is supposed to have a pretty low impedance path when it comes in contact with the grounding system so that the fault current can be transferred safely and correctly to the ground without any damage. Hence, structural earthing is preferred in such cases.

However, in the case of the conventional earthing method, there is an independent electrical system with a dedicated conductor for earthing. This conductor directly connects with the metallic structure or the electrical equipment and forms a bridge at the earth pits. In the case of electrical equipment, the conventional method of earthing proves to be much more beneficial.

In the case of structural earthing, there is no need for dedicated earthing, which makes the maintenance process pretty easy. It is a relatively economical process. On the other hand, conventional earthing might take a little bit more effort for maintenance, but it also guarantees the most safety for human lives.

Another main difference between structural and conventional earthing is that the former requires no superior conductor for carrying the fault current. In contrast, the latter has larger fault currents and requires a conductor. Structural earthing doesn’t require additional area, but conventional earthing does.
